Good books, good friends, good food, good conversation, good life.
About Us.
For over 10 years, the GOOS Book Club has convened on about every 8th Thursday evening
--give or take as no one in this platoon is shackled to either a calendar or a stopwatch--
to discuss a good book over a nice meal.
As noted earlier, the progress of this Book Club is founded upon a tradition of
dragooning, which harkens back to the very first meeting. The person who was shanghaied
to name the book under review at one meeting then has the responsibility to draft
the next guy, who thence names the next selection. The dragooned GOO, tapped for
service at the end of each meeting, is responsible for giving the Group some background
information on the author and then moderates the ensuing discussion on the book
itself.
There is neither rhyme nor reason to what book might be selected for the Group's
consumption as that choice is left entirely to the GOO pressed into service. Sometimes
the selections are contemporary novels or non-fiction works. One meeting might have
the troupe discussing a novel directly off of the New York Times Current Best-Seller
List. The next meeting might involve a work by Sophocles or Twain. Thereafter, it
might be a historical work or a biography. One never knows. This pattern has offered
the Group a diverse array of literature covering all points of the compass.
The GOOS usually meet at a nice Baton Rouge restaurant for these pleasant gatherings,
but shake up the schedule every now and then by meeting for dinner at the homes
of the individual members.
TYPICAL GOOS MEETING:
- 6:30 p.m. commencement; drinks and conversation.
- 7 p.m. (or so), food is ordered.
- 7:10 p.m., the President calls the meeting to order and gets various GOOS to I.D.
good books they've read lately.
- President turns the meeting over to the dragooned GOO, who commences the discussion
on the current selection.
- Open discussion on the book among the membership.
- Next GOO dragooned and next book named.
